The Man. The Mystery. The Madness.

Dex Foray has never been anyone’s fool – until he missed his chance for happiness with Perry Palomino. Broken and alone, Dex has no choice but to rise from the ashes Perry left behind and find his own path to redemption. But nothing in Dex’s life has ever come easily, especially when there’s a dark madness waiting in the wings.

Told from Dex’s POV, And With Madness Comes the Light is short story/novella that spans the time period from the end of Lying Season (Book #4) until the end of On Demon Wings (Book #5). If you were ever wondering what really happened to Dex while Perry was gone - his journey to Dex 2.0 - now is your chance

 My Review:

I've said in the past, several times actually, that I am not usually a fan of short stories or novellas.  There is an exception to that rule, however.  There is a short list of authors who have bamboozled me with this little trick. And I say bamboozled in the most complimentary way.  When an author writes a novella in a different point of view, the point of view of a character I love, I can't help but want to read it.

The Experiment in Terror series is told from Perry's point of view so without these lovely little nuggets of perverted filled joy we would never truly know all the sick, sick shit Dex thinks up.  Or all the sugary sweetness he has inside but rarely lets show, as the case may be.

"I love her, more than anyone should love anything. The kind of love that either fills you up or eats away at you. I lover her at my own risk. I lover her...dangerously."

And With Madness Comes the Light takes place simultaneously with On Demon Wings there isn't the need for any type of breakdown or buildup; it jumps right in to the story.  We meet up with Dex in his sullen stupor after Perry walks out on him, we follow him through his depression, learn what it took to get him out of it and how exactly he ended up back in Perry's life.

Dex being pretty tight-lipped and reserved, up to this point in the series, is usually so mysterious.  All of that flies out the window with this novella.  There is a hefty bag filled of soul bearing and a tenderness that brought me to the verge of tears.  Who knew Dex had that in him?  Okay, a lot of us did but I'm not sure many of us were convinced we would ever really get to see him quite so raw.

I fell more in love with Dex, Experiment in Terror and Karina Halle after reading And With Madness Comes the Light.  Honestly, I would read anything this woman writes. No one else creates characters as complex, multi-layered, intriguing, funny and loveable as she does.  Dex is one of my all time favorite characters and I think it is a title he will hold for a very, very long time.  I thoroughly enjoyed getting another glimpse into his world.

    1. I know, I know. I've actually already read more this year than all of last year combined but the were all part of series I read.

I did just accept a review request for one today, though I gave her fair warning on my bad relationship with novellas. She probably won't send it now. :(
